When doing upright crunches, it's easier to focus on the stomach muscles than
when doing regular crunches but difficult to get the same intensity because of
gravity; you need to lean back as far as possible so your stomach muscles have
to work against gravity to pull your head and shoulders up and forward.
-
When doing upright crunches, you can pull your shoulder toward your opposite
hip. You can also apply that effort at different angles, such as the opposite
ribcage, or the shoulder on the same side. Or lean left and use your left
oblique to pull yourself upright. There are literally an infinite number of
angles you can apply.
-
With any of these crunches, don't expect to be able to focus perfectly on the
abdominals. The more you do it, the more you can
do it. It may feel like you're doing almost nothing at first. If so, you should
look forward to the first moment when the muscles start to respond and you can
feel the difference.
-
Really savor new sensations, like feeling your stomach muscles, or the illusion
of strong rods running up inside your back from your hips through your shoulder
blades - which a few days later turn into encasing support columns that wrap
from your back to your front on each side. They're amazing when they happen,
but they always fade into the background within one or two days. They're still
there if you think about it, but the novelty wears off. Fortunately new ones
always come along to replace them. It ends somewhere, but there's no end in
sight.
