Commitment vs Control Issues
|
- Yes, I called our friend both him and her to further mask his identity - or is it hers?
- Anyone with self-respect living in the real world has control issues. The trick is to avoid cutting off your nose to spite your face.
- Nearly everyone has had some activity they initially loathed but loved after they got past the learning curve. That's particularly hard
with physical activity because physical drudgery requires physical endurance, which in turn requires "exercise" to develop.
- People will endure intellectual drudgery because their future economic welfare depends on it. Some are enthusiastic, some are grinds, some are underachievers.
Guess which one I was.
- Here's a hint; when I finally matured into my own special form of semi-adulthood, I accepted the need for intellectual drudgery but lucked into computer programming which wasn't, at
least in the learning phase
- I accepted the need for exercise in the evening to "energize" for studying but didn't have the self-discipline to actually do it. Sometimes the actual act
of just beginning when I was anticipating that half-hour of drudgery was just too much. I'd put it off over and over.
- Here's the crucial part. I almost gave up. If I had, chances are computer school would have gone the way of all my other enthusiasms.
- As I've related elsewhere ad nauseum, I came up with a system to "just start" everyday that actually worked, and ended up "addicting" me to the
boost in mood and energy.
- In exchange for a small amount of control - commiting to at least start a workout everyday, you are actually gaining a huge amount of control. Every day, the
amount of exercise you do is controlled by how you feel that day, not some ambitious program commited to when you actually were feeling ambitious and are
now trying to live up to day after day for the rest of your life or until you advance to the next, harder level, or give up.
- You're also gaining a programming interface into your subconscious. I plan to talk about interfaces ad nauseum as well, but for now it's
a matter of visualization combined with activity. If you start a workout everyday with the intent you will exercise until you feel like stopping with
the motivation that you want to feel refreshed and in a better mood afterwards - that's visualization combined with activity.
- The longer you keep it up the more you become "energy-focused". I use the term "brain fog" to be that state when you feel lethargic but really don't want to be. You
just don't seem to have the energy to think clearly, although you'd like to. The more energy-focused you are, the more likely you are to workout to relieve brain-fog
and in the long run less likely to suffer from it day-to-day.
